Murthy v. Missouri (government–platform jawboning)

Supreme Court of the United States

States and users alleged federal officials coerced platforms, including Twitter/X, into suppressing COVID and election speech. The Supreme Court held the plaintiffs lacked standing and did not reach the First Amendment merits. It is the lead U.S. case on government pressure to moderate — not a takedown order against X.

At stake

When government communication with platforms becomes unconstitutional coercion.

Outcome. Dismissed on standing. No injunction against federal agencies.

Allowed and not allowed

What public sources currently show — not a live feed of every withheld post. Individual jurisdiction withholdings still only appear as a notice when opened from that country.

Legal demandVerified source

Information requests, not a speech filter

The US leads emergency and routine information requests (3,788 in H2 2024, 78.54% disclosed). It is not a top content-removal requester. There is no open-source US government ranking filter.

Not allowed

Account records disclosed under valid legal process. Isolated takedowns when a court order meets X’s legal bar.

Still allowed

Political speech is broadly available. The First Amendment constrains government-ordered political takedowns. For You has no US-government filter in the public repo.
